The best reason I have saved for last and that is, your fireplace is costing you heat loss all day and night even when your not using it. The reason is that your damper in your fireplace is not airtight they are made that way to maintain a certain amount of clearance even when they are closed. So If you have a fireplace that does not have a glass-door you are wasting energy, up and out the chimney. In this article its easy to see how you can get more heat out of your fireplace with just a few small changes, that will let you burn outside air instead of the air that you already paid to heat, and by installing glass-doors to stop heat loss.
The first thing that you would want to know about your fireplace is it in good working order? As a masonry contractor in the Seattle area we see quite a few chimney every year that are unsafe to burn and need to be repaired. Some of the things that you would want to look for would be, if the fireplace needs repair or has loose brick, smoking problems, water damage, or damper problems. One of the best ways to see if your fireplace is ready to burn is to ask for an inspection from a masonry contractor in your area. Now is the time to start that fire, and as we said above we want the fireplace to burn in an efficient way.
Once you have removed all the dirt and soot, you may decide to add an extra sparkle to your freshly cleaned fireplace tools. You can do this by polishing with a brass polisher. Follow all label instructions and warnings when applying this to your tools. You can now enjoy your clean fireplace for the rest of the season, without worrying about flying dust or ash or about a dangerous creosote fire breaking out in the fireplace. Do not forget to close the flue to prevent any drafts and to keep your firebox free from debris. Decorating your fireplace is a pleasure once it is all clean. The fun part is deciding what you will use. How about creating a fresh look for your fireplace by getting a new fireplace screen? There are so many options out there as far as design and style. Some of my favorites are single panel fireplace screens. With a single panel fireplace screen, you do not need to have much room on your hearth. Because it is a flat fireplace screen, it can sit right up against the firebox and takes up very little precious space. As for the design, how about adding the fresh look of spring with a leaf fireplace screen? If you really love that look, you can even get a matching leaf fireplace tool set and log holder to go with it!
If you have a sitting arrangement where you have made it possible for people to pretty much focus on one point, then you have a great place for a fireplace. Its just like arranging a room around a television. Only this time, its a different room where no fireplace exists. Its just a nice place to talk and enjoy each others company with a fireplace...in the middle of the room. Back Yard Thats right! Take it outside. Enjoy the fireplace experience in your backyard. Put it on the patio or your deck. Anywhere you think you would like to have some company, build yourself a nice fireplace. Of course, you can get a little more involved with the fireplace construction and build yourself a nice rock or brick structure to house your fireplace insert. Let it stand about six feet tall if you want. Its up to you. Learn how to build it and your company will come. Those are all great ideas. But, give your own home some thought. If you have an area, any area that you think would look nice with a fireplace, chances are you are right. The only stupid place for a fireplace, is that place where there isnt one yet.
